1969 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Gold Top with a one-piece body and a three-piece neck, all pots coded 137-6902 (2nd week of 1969). The pickups are patent number mini humbuckers. There are scratches at the back of the neck, near the jack plate (a metal jack plate replacing the old broken plastic one long gone), and the usual buckle worming on the back, as well as a few dings in the top and headstock. The A-String tuner has a slight bend with absolutely no effect on its functionality. There is lacquer checking (from rapid temperature changes) all over, which is true of all old gold tops that have been used and not refinished. For me, they are the signs of maturity, like a wrinkled face. All of which means it’s a vintage guitar you won’t be afraid to take out with you.

The guitar sounds strong and throaty without the mud you associate with full-size humbuckers. It weighs 9 lbs 11.5 oz. The neck is straight and plays comfortably and beautifully up and down, it is relatively chunky but not fat (.9/1.0/1.06 inches at first, 7th and 12th frets and 1.688 inches at the nut). The frets measure about .105 inches wide and .040 inches high (wide and low). There is some slight wear visible on the first nine frets but they have plenty of life left.
A feature of special interest (to the obsessive like myself) is the truss rod cover. You are probably used to seeing simply “Deluxe” there but on this one it says “Les Paul Deluxe” in script on two lines . I believe this is the original form of the Truss Rod Cover for the Deluxe, which was introduced in 1969, along with the LP Personal, the LP Professional, and the LP Jumbo, all of which use the same font and design. By 1972 they still showed these truss covers in the parts catalogue for those guitars, while the Deluxe is the more typical larger font, without "Les Paul".
